BTG’s patented fast pyrolysis technology is based on intensive mixing of biomass particles and hot sand particles in modified rotating cone reactor. The unique design is characterised by an intense mixing without the need of an inert carrier gas, so that the pyrolysis products are undiluted by carrier gas. This results in a remarkable small reactor, reduced system complexity and minimum down stream equipment size. The innovative reactor is the result of research done at the University of Twente, the Netherlands, that BTG further improved and optimised.
Vapours produced in the reactor are rapidly cooled in a condenser yielding the oil product and some permanent gases. In the process up to 75 wt% pyrolysis oil and only 25 wt% char and gas are produced as primary products. In only few seconds the biomass is transformed into bio-oil.
Charcoal and sand are recycled to a combustor, where charcoal is burned to reheat the sand. The permanent gases can be utilised in a gas engine to generate electricity. In principal, no external utilities are required.
The comparison of different pyrolysis technologies can be found on BTG-BTL pages.
